Sewage surveillance
Sewage surveillance involves extracting (health) information from wastewater. This has been done on a small scale for diseases like polio for decades but was significantly scaled up during the COVID-19 pandemic with a national monitoring network at all wastewater treatment plants: the NRS (Nationale Rioolwater Surveillance) of the Ministry of Health (RIVM). Sewage surveillance is also possible (and has been implemented) on the scale of city districts, neighborhoods, and even individual connections, such as those from hospitals, schools, and nursing homes.

We support (health) organizations in conducting wastewater surveillance. With our knowledge of sewer systems, we understand where and how to sample in order to effectively extract this information from wastewater. In our publications, you will find several examples.
