Distributed Temperature Sensing
(DTS)
DTS stands for Distributed Temperature Sensing, a measurement technique that allows temperature to be measured at many locations simultaneously. This type of measurement can detect illicit connections, as these often cause unexpected temperature variations in the sewer system: wastewater is typically warmer than a stormwater system, and rainwater is often colder than a wastewater system. For DTS, a special measurement unit and sensor cables are required, which are placed in the sewer. By measuring over a period of several days, you can also uncover discharge patterns and assess whether it is a completely misconnected household or just a washing machine.
