Disconnecting from the sewer
Disconnecting from the sewer system refers to stopping the discharge of stormwater into the combined sewer system, achieved through measures such as creating stormwater sewers, infiltration facilities, or modifying paved surfaces to reduce runoff. Disconnecting alters the flow of water volumes and pollutant loads in the urban water system and has impacts on wastewater treatment, the surface water system, and the soil. Successful disconnecting requires considering all potential effects of the intervention.

On behalf of STOWA, we have assessed the opportunities and risks of disconnecting. We also have experience in creating disconnecting opportunity maps and support municipalities in developing visions around disconnecting strategies.
